Literature: Jacob Thage: ‘Danske Smykker’, reproduced and discussed on p. 170, Figure 151: ‘One of the earliest and most distinctive jewellery is the necklace of 1956 with two amethysts’.

Fifty years ago, the silversmith Bent Knudsen Kolding began experimenting for fun with the scissors. He made art cutouts in paper and other cheap and lightweight materials. At the time, It was quite unusual and very modern. His simple mobiles quickly became one of the recognized designer products, which also helped Danish design achieve recognition abroad, beginning in the mid-1950s. Many imitators have since exploited his idiosyncrasies.

Bent Knudsen (1924-97) was employed by Hans Hansen’s Silversmith A/S in Kolding until 1956, but founded his own company in 1952 with paper design, in the city together with his wife Anni. Significant jewellery was also an important part of the workshop’s production beginning in 1956, but for the last 30 years, paper mobiles have been the main article. The company continuously produces new edition of Bent Knudsen’s handmade designs, and exports them to, among other places, Japan, where the simple yet highly refined forms are appreciated. Bent Knudsen is represented at the Kolding Museum.
